Access to the fioodland is strictly limited, but along the border of it there is a tourist path. Those passing by it have the opportunity to learn what the island is rich in, particularly the fioodland, but also see a lot. Besides that, in the future it is planned to create a special base, where the schoolchildren of Zaporizzhya would be able to have lessons in Botany, Zoology, Geography and History here, but now the active members of the Public Committee of Preserving Nature on Khortytsia, formed in the best traditions of restructuring, organizes in the floodland and on the steppe plots of Khortitsa some excursions for the town schoolchildren.All these features made it possible to declare Khortytsia a memorial site of nature more than 20 years ago and in 1965 it was declared a state historic and cultural 'reserve. Since the very first days of the reserve's existence the administration of it, supported by the actions of the broad sections of general public, set to work on preserving and increasing the natural wealth of the island and simultaneously restoring historic monuments, the number of which is several dozens, found on the island.
By the way, it was the members of the committee who, supported by the press, organized in 1987—1988 a campaign to protect Khortytsia from a planned construction of a bridge namely across its territory. The scientific and general community achieved success in calling a collective discussion of the transport problems in the regional centre. Not one but a few variants of crossing the Dnieper were offered and at last chosen was one, the realization of which will bring the least damage to the island, since the crossing will be built in the northern part of the island, the cultivated part.
In a word, Khortytsia is not only a symbol of careful attitude to the historic and nature inheritance of our people, but also a means of moulding patriotism of the population, a feeling of being the master and protector of one's Motherland.
