The Monument to Soldier and Sailor is located on Khrustalny (Crystal) Cape. It's height is 40 meters, and it was considered one of the biggest monuments of the Soviet Union. The story of its creation is controversial, and has 35 years of age. Its construction was ordered by the Soviet Union Government in 1972, but the construction was started only in 1981.
This sculpture was the main composition of the Memorial Complex on Khrustalny Cape, which was never embodied. Many years the controversy about the monument did not abate. Some representatives considered it unfortunate, too grotesque and historically inaccurate, because the weapons of soldiers sent in the wrong direction, where was the enemy. Therefore, almost in the final stages of the construction of the monument was closed, in addition to run out of money allocated for its construction.
In 1990 there was even a threat of dismantling of the monument as a result of the creative failure. But the Sevastopol city Union of Veterans, however, defended the monument dedicated to the defenders of Sevastopol. In 2005 started an extensive work on its restoration. Was made a large area with the eternal flame, great views of the Sevastopol Bay and sea gate of the city, behind the monument are alleys with trees and benches.
The Monument to Soldier and Sailor is one of the most visited tourist places. Need to see the monument close to appreciate its scope, proportions, grandeur and power.
