In 1808-1811 the Governor of the Southern Russia Arman Emmanuil du Plessis, the Duke de' Richelieu built his Crimean summer house (dacha) in small Crimean Tatar village Gurzuf. He also founded a nice park around. Very soon Gurzuf became a favourite place for VIP and aristocracy visitors from Moscow and Saint- Petersburg. Several years later small town became a place for the rest and recreation of Russian Empire elite. But the first name in this rank is rightfully that of Alexander Pushkin. He called the three weeks spent by him in Gurzuf in the summer of 1820 with the family of General Nikholas Rayevsky the happiest moments of his life. Charmed by the South Coast Pushkin gave it an epithet that was to become a winged expression: "A magic land! A delightful vision..." The Crimean period of the poet`s life and creative work was not long in duration - all in all about one month, however, it left a brilliant and deep imprint in Russian poetry. Pushkin`s immortal works - long poems "The Fountain of Bakhchisaray", "Evgeny Onegin", "The Prisoner of the Caucasus", many verses were evoked by the Crimea, its natural scenery and history.
The poet stayed in a house of the General-Governor Arman Emmanuel Duke the Richelieau. In front of this building, which survived after two hundred years, a memorial symbol of white marble column with a lyre has been set up.

The Byzantines first constructed a small fortress here in the 6th century. The ruins of medieval Genoa fortress (11th - 15th centuries) are visible nowadays on the cliff. And impressive severe medieval tunnel through the rock to the sea attract visitors.

The magic nook of Crimea - thus Gurzuf. The settlement with 2 thousand inhabitants (that is east Yalta and 20 Km distant from the town), is called. It's enchantment is in harmony and fascination of landscape, exotic south vegetation and oriental colour of narrow by-streets, an abundance of ressing sunshine, ancient history. Strongly built walls of the old fortress can tall many tailes. Their foot was built for Gorzuvita fortress by older of Byzantine emperor Yustinian in the 6th century. Among the later fortifications are Genoese ones (the 14th century). In the centre of Gurzuf there is wonderful old park. Here, environed with fragrant greenery, you can here the sound of invigorating spurts of the fountains, enjoy the splendor of their sculptural composition. On the sea-shore, in the grove of the old silvery olive-trees, you will encounter the monument to Alexander Pushkin, world famous Russian poet. Not far from it there is the house where, in August- September, 1820, the young poet spend the happiest days of his life. At present here the museum is opened. It invites visitors. The writer A. Chekhov's house-museum situated the shore of picturesque Gurzuf cove also awaits its guests. In Gurzuf there are Pushkin cypress, Chekhov cove, Shalyapin rock, the famous singer dreamt about building of «Art Castle" on this rock.
